The Census Bureau released Census Explorer, a new interactive mapping tool that gives users easier access to neighborhood level statistics. The mapping tool uses updated statistics from the 2008 American Community Survey (ACS). Press release from the Census Bureau.

Hurricane Sandy Resource Guide
DANJ board member and Ocean County College Librarian, Caitlyn Cook has created a resource guide for Hurricane Sandy victims and recovery workers. Caitlyn was able to get the guide up within a few days of the storm to assist with the recovery efforts. The guide provides links and contact information for disaster assistance, counseling and crisis, employment and business, safe clean-up, rumors and fraud, news, and more.

Federal Programs Available to Unemployed Workers

Newark Public Library Honored by GPO
DANJ congratulates Laura Saurs and the Newark Public Library for receiving the 2012 Federal Depository Libraries of the Year Award. NPL was the only regional depository to receive the award, which was presented at the recent Depository Library Council Meeting. Newark was selected for "making the best use of limited resources and continuing to provide excellent public service." Good job, Laura!

GPO State Forecast Survey
The Government Printing Office is conducting a State Forecast Survey in order to obtain information that will inform a National FDLP Plan and shape the future of the Depository Library Program. Laura Saurs, the Regional Librarian for New Jersey has submitted the survey based on the responses of individual depository libraries. The next step in this project is to create a State Action Plan based on the survey. Please review the document below, and send feedback to Laura by August 24, 2012.

Uniform Electronic Legal Materials Act
DANJ recently submitted a letter to the New Jersey Law Revision Commission recommending positive action on the Uniform Electronic Legal Materials Act (UELMA). UELMA provides a framework for ensuring that online state legal material will be perserved.

Funding for ACS
Recently, the House of Representatives passed a bill (H.R. 5326) that cuts significant funding to the American Community Survey, a vital information gathering program of the U.S. Census. It awaits Senate action. More information is available from Census Director Robert Groves, The Washington Times, and Business Week.
